Desert Star Playhouse Giveaway

Several years ago my husband and I were introduced to a fabulous place called the Desert Star Playhouse. The Desert Star Playhouse produces family friendly comedic musicals. It is very family friendly (for children over 8ish) and has yummy food too. It is one of Steven and my favorite date nights because we get food and a show. We have purchased season passes several times and it really is the best bang for your buck. With the way our schedules are we usually get to see a show around Valentines day, in the spring, my birthday (June), our anniversary (August), Steven's birthday (October) and a Christmas date. Since our season pass is payed for in advance all we have to pay for is the sitter and how much we want to spend on food. Sometimes it's just ice cream, other times it's pizza and smoothies.
We did so much moving around the past few years that it had been a little while since our last show there. Recently we went and saw Kicking the Hobbit, Bored of the Rings. We LOVED it, it even made it to my favorite top 5 shows I have seen there. Here is a brief synopsis from their website on the show...
Science Fiction geek Walter gets a “Dear John” from his fiance because he spends too much time fantasizing about "Star Wars" and "Lord of the Rings." Now Walter must journey to Middle-Earth with a zany band of misfits to return balance to the the world...and his girlfriend. Come along on this hilarious adventure to find out if Walter can defeat the Dark Lord Sharon and become a hero to couch potatoes everywhere.

Walter was played by Corey Brandenburger who is a regular there and is very funny. He did an awesome job. As someone who loves all types of theater one of the things I look for, especially here, is when the actors push the others. Sometimes they try to break the others out of character, as the audience sits back and watches them go on tangents or the other cast members try to hold straight faces. Corey is good at filling in those moments and has perfect comedic timing. Another cast member  was thrilled to see was Kerstin Davis. She was in several of the first shows we saw and I just loved her and the characters she portrayed. Then with all the moving around we did the few shows we saw she wasn't in. When I saw it was her I turned to my husband to remind him she was one of my favorites. She is fun and comfortable going off script, plus I love some of the voices she does thru the show. She choreographeed the show as well, adding to her talent pool.

Gollum was played by Mary Parker Williams who not only is the veteran at the Desert Star but the assistant director. She makes some of the best faces and nails her double personality character. Dog the Bounty Hunter was played by Bryan Dayley. My husband and I agree it was so fun to see him in this role (he also nailed his accent) since we remember his very first performance at the Desert Star. He has come a long way and has made it onto our list of favorites.  The ensemble as a whole did an excellent job together. There were a few new faces like Jeff Jensen who impressed us with his singing in the Olio, and George Anderson who was equally as funny to watch. Carli Christoffersen played Bilbo and is very talented. We have seen her a few times before and I always look forward to when she sings a solo in the Olio at the end of the show.

The best part is you don't have to be familiar with whatever movies they are doing a parody of in order to enjoy yourself. You get a good laugh every time. The Hobbit plays at the Desert Star till March 23rd. With only a month left don't be afraid to get you tickets a head of time, they tend to sell out. I have always had a pleasant and helpful experince with the box office, even when having to move dates around. If you have to make changes to your ticket dates, Desert Star is very accommodating in helping you find another night to attend or giving you a credit until you can figure it out. The sooner you book the better seats you get too. Call their box office at 801-266-2600, and get ready to pee your pants from laughing so hard!
The Desert Star has also donated two tickets to their show Kicking the Hobbit. Please leave a comment below to be entered in the drawing. For more entries share this post on Facebook, Twitter, or on your own blog. Leave additional comments for each share. Giveaway closes on Monday, February 25th at 11:59 MST. Winner will be picked at random thru random.org. Winner will be announced the following day.  Good Luck!

Daring Do-overs

When we lived in American Fork I made lots of new friends from my church. In our church we are given opportunities to visit other women in our neighborhood regularly. I got to know this one particular special lady because of this unique opportunity. She was very talented at decorating on a dime. I tried to glean from her what I could in the 4 years of monthly visits. I feel like I finally have the courage to attempt some of what I learned. Here are a few things I have done lately to add to our home on a budget.
In Yesenia's room she needed something for her books. She would pile them all on her bed at night, so I needed something close to her bed. She also takes books in an out so much it needed to have easy access. So I bought 2 spice racks from Ikea. They cost about $4 each. After assembling them they needed a paint job. The last time Ace Hardware had a free paint day I got a light pink for her room and my mom came along and got a darker pink to accent things. The only thing I didn't like was that it was a flat paint. When it's free though I really can't complain to much. After painting the spice racks I spray painted them with a clear glossy coat. That also only cost about $4. Then I hung them right by her bead and she loves them!

I have slowly been doing what is now Adrianna's room. Once my baby is out of the cradle in my room I will most likely move Adrianna in with Yesenia. I have a few months to worry about that and finish her room. I started with this little hook thing.

It was left behind by the prior owner in the master closet so I took it down and painted it. It has an Ikea sticker on it, so if they still sell them I am assuming it is a good deal. I taped the nobs with painters tape and bought a cheap glossy purple spray paint at Home Depot. Really easy and now Adrianna's room has a pretty hook thing for her to hanng her coats and things on.
I also painted these picture hooks the same color. I bought them at the goodwill for $1.50 each. I really like it, and if my girls ever want different colors it would be really easy to re-paint.

I'm ready to start some bigger projects I have set aside. I'll post those once I finish or attempt them.

The Flour Game

Once a week my family enjoys doing something called Family Home Evening. That is where as a family we sing songs, have a spiritual thought, play a game and eat yummy snacks together. It's a great time for my husband and I to teach a concept we need to work on as a family or we sit back and watch the kids imaginations fly. For example Kadan was "lesson" this week. So he used his pokemon to show us that when we say hurtful things it hurts like these pokey pokemon, and when we say nice things it feels good like these soft ones.  Every week re rotate who is in charge of what part of Family Home Evening. Here is a picture of our FHE chart.

This week's game got a little messy. We decided to play the flour game. I saw this on Pinterest and my memories playing it growing up came flooding in. You start out by packing a mug or teacup with flour, and turning it upside down on a plate.

Then with a coin on top everyone takes turns cutting it, trying hard not to let the coin fall. If you are the one that causes the coin to fall you get to fish it out with no hands. The laughs and fun come naturally in this.

Here is a video of the end of Kadan's Pokemon lesson and some of our flour game:

Happy Valentines Day

As many know and more are figuring out, I love holidays. I try to make them special for my kids. Starting last night we had an early pizza night and got heart shaped pizzas for dinner. Today the kids awoke to a valentine surprise waiting for them. Even my husband got a fun card and a movie.
The hardest part for me was waking up early to make my kids a special breakfast. I am not a morning person so mom being awake before them is just as surprising as not having cold cereal for breakfast.
I found a cute and yummy recipe on Pinterest for red velvet crepes.
The recipe is added at the end of the post. Kid tested and approved by all!

We got Krispie Kreme Dounuts and went out to dinner at Buffalo Wild Wings. Overall it was a good day. Now I am ready to go to bed and crash! A whole day with no nap is hard on a mommy with a three month old.

Here is the recipe for breakfast. I forgot marscapone cheese, so I used cool whip instead and it was just as yummy! If you have extra crepes like I did you can freeze them in between wax papers.

Red Velvet Crêpes (click here for direct link to original recipe)

by, duhlicious.com

Red Velvet Crepes
(Makes about 24, 8″ crepes)
Ingredients: – 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 3 tablespoons sugar
- 2 cups butter milk
- 1 1/4 cup whole or lowfat milk
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 1/2 tablespoons cocoa powder, sifted
- 1 tablespoon red food color gel
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
+ 2 tablespoons cooking oil (for pan)
*Update: Because the buttermilk lends to the acidity of this batter, do not substitute the baking soda for extra baking powder. If you add more baking powder, and omit the baking soda, you’ll end up with a heavy and dense crepe. In order to activate the baking soda, it requires an acidic substance, which the buttermilk provides. Double-acting baking powder (likely, this is what you have in your kitchen) is activated by heat and an acidic element, and in this case, baking soda does the trick. Enough with the chemistry lesson– just don’t make substitutes if you want light and fluffy crepes; the recipe is balanced to account for ingredient properties.
Mascarpone Cream Filling- 500 mL heavy cream
- 300 gr mascarpone cheese
- 1/2 cup icing sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- zest of 1 orange (optional, but adds nice tang)
+ 1/2 cup raspberry jam (optional, for filling crepes)
Chocolate Ganache Topping- 75 gr bittersweet chocolate
- 75 mL heavy cream
- 1 tablespoon sugar

Directions:
For the Mascarpone Filling:
1. Using a mixer, mix mascarpone cheese, 1/4 cup sugar, and vanilla until soft and fluffy. Set aside.
2. Whip cream and remaining sugar to a stiff peak. Carefully fold into the mascarpone cheese until combined. Refrigerate until ready to use.

For Chocolate Ganche Sauce
1. Place chocolate in a heatproof bowl and set aside. In a small sauce pan, heat cream and sugar to a rolling boil. Remove from heat, and pour over chocolate. Carefully mix until homogenous, and set aside until ready to use. If the ganache sets, re-melt the chocolate over a double boiler.

Red Velvet Crepes 1. In a large bowl stir together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder. Set aside.
2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, milk, egg, sugar, melted butter, vanilla extract and food coloring. Whisk until combined.

3. Pour the liquid ingredients into the mixing bowl with the dry ingredients, and stir with a wooden spoon until the dry ingredients are combined. The batter will be a little runny (think soup). If you find that the batter is too thick and pancake like, add more milk (regular). Make sure the batter is clear of lumps.
4. With a pastry brush, brush the surface of large (non-stick) skillet with cooking oil. Heat it over medium heat. Test skillet after a couple of minutes by drizzling a few few drops of water onto the cooking surface. If the drops sizzle and evaporate, the surface is hot enough.
5. Turn the heat down to medium. For each crepe, spoon or ladle about 1/4 cup of the batter into the center of the skillet. Holding onto the handle of the pan, remove it from the heat and swirl the pan so the batter coats the bottom of the pan. You want to make the coating as thin as possible. If you have holes in the crepe, go ahead and add more batter to the pan to cover them. Return to heat.
6. As the batter cooks, it will dry and lose its shine (~ 2 minutes). Once this happens, use a non-metal spatula and carefully flip the crepe over. Finish cooking the crepe on the other side (~ 45 seconds).
7. Gently slide the cooked crepe onto an ovenproof plate, and keep the finished crepes warm in an oven set at 195 degrees.
Assembling the Crepes:
- If using raspberry jam, place a small amount the center of the crepe. Pipe mascarpone cream filling, and carefully roll.

- Drizzle with chocolate ganache sauce and dust with icing sugar.

Cookies

Another reason I love Eagle Mountain is the nice and generous neighbors. We have one that had extra sugar cookies from the holidays she was giving away. The kids were so excited to frost them, they didn't care that they were pumpkins and Christmas trees. Finally for an afternoon snack we decorated the cookies.  While the cookies were in the oven I decided to make some yummy frosting. Adrianna got to the blue batch while I was mixing a pink batch, she is one of my messiest kids.

Kadan wanted blue frosting to represent water Pokemon.

Yesenia used every kind of sprinkle I brought out (good thing I only put half of them on the table.)

Adrianna just painted hers and didn't eat any of it. I think she was full from all the frosting she snuck.

Mean while the baby slept. Ok, I played with her a little bit too! You know how some people say, "I'm not really a baby person," or things similar to that, I totally am a baby person. I love me some baby time.  Overall the kids had a blast, and the countdown till Dad gets home went by quicker.
Some odd reason my dad thinks I am so cruel to his granddaughter, weird?!

Happy Chinese New Year

I'm not sure why but from a very young age I started a fascination with the Asian culture. It started when I read the book Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes by Eleanor Coerr. One tradition I started celebrating with my family is Chinese New Year. We clean our house to rid old bad spirits and bring in new luck. We give my kids money in red envelopes, and we have a Chinese dinner as a family.

A few years ago a long time friend of mine taught some women from her neighborhood how to make pot stickers. My mom and I were lucky enough to be included in that group. Now every year for Chinese New Year I make them as part of our dinner. Although this year I couldn't find gyoza wrappers so I used won ton wrappers instead, which just means they are square not round. After a you tube search on how to fold them it worked out fine. Well as long as I made them, my husbands were a little odd looking!
My batch of pot stickers. I was getting anxious at the end to be done so I stuffed a few of them to full.

Yesenia literally telling Dad, "Yours aren't as pretty as Mom's are!"

This year I also attempted a sweet and sour chicken recipe I got off Pinterest. Here is the link to it: Sweet & Sour Chicken For those of you not familiar with Pinterest, This link will take you to my Pinterest page. Click on the picture of the recipe and it will redirect you to the original recipe.
My kids all loved the sweet and sour chicken. Yesenia probably only liked it cause I told her the recipe had kethcup in it. Looks like I have a new family favorite that all can enjoy, a rarity in my house.

On top of that the local Chinese cafe here also sold me approximately 30 fortune cookies for only $2.00! So we dipped them in white chocolate and sprinkled red sprinkles on them. Red is the color for good luck if you can't tell there's a theme here. The whole meal was a lot of work, but well worth the fun. The kids enjoyed reading their Chinese zodiacs, coloring year of the snake and watching Kung Fu Panda.

Home Depot Craft & $15 Giveaway

I love free events! Anything to keep my kids busy, is free, or keeps them from messing up my home I am all in favor for! One of our favorites is the Home Depot Craft. The first Saturday of every month they have a free kid's craft. This month being February was a wooden Valentines holder.

Kadan (almost 7) is my hands on do it your self  kid. He can do a majority of the crafts with little guidance. Occasionally we make sure a few things are lined right or dad has to do some things that need a little muscle, but overall he does really good. Yesenia (4 yrs old) needs more help. She helps hold things, can tap in the nails half way, and is very good at being patient. When two parents are helping 3 kids, sometimes with fewer hammers than we need patience can be the biggest help of all. Adrianna (almost 2) can't really do any of the craft but she can have fun pretending she can. I help her hammer, or let her think she is hammering. When all is said and done I have 3 very happy kids. Not only did we get out of the house the kids have used their fine motor skills, learned the importance of following instructions, had family bonding time and in the end felt a sense of accomplishment. After completing their craft they get a pin to put on the free apron they also received.

After the project we got to go home and paint them. Not only is this the messy part, it's the part where mom needs to practice her patience.

Here's the finished projects. Can't wait to write some fun messages for my kids the next few weeks and put the messages in them.

Gummy Goodness

Yesenia woke the other morning complaining that she could only move her head so far. That's when I realized she had gum stuck to her shoulder and her hair stuck to the gum.

There are reasons why I don't buy gum.
1- I chewed it so much in high school my jaw now clicks when I chew.
2- I am afraid of the mess it will make if the wrong child chews it or disposes of it.
Yesenia is my only gum chewer so far. So when this happened to her I wasn't really surprised. Only surprised that she had gum and that she went to sleep with it in her mouth. I'm still not quite sure where she got it.

I have vague memories of having gum in my hair once before and my dad using peanut butter to get it out. Yesenia thought I was crazy and she was worried it wouldn't work. If it didn't I just told her we would go to a friends around the corner to cut it and surprisingly she was ok with that.

I am very pleased to announce that the peanut butter totally worked! After the peanut butter hair mask and a good wash it all ended up okay. Hopefully lesson learned.

I'm Not Inclined To Resign To Maturity

Since we live so far from reality in Eagle Mountain our options for TV are few and far between. There is pretty much only 2 satellite companies available out here. We also decided since I chose to stop working we had to make budget cuts, and TV was one of them. We did purchase a digital satellite however, which allows us limited basic channels which fulfils my Survivor withdrawals. One thing I miss is channel flipping and believe it or not re-run watching. After the kids go to bed Steven and I usually cuddle and watch something together. I am also very fortunate to be the "remote holder" in the family. I decided last week to watch re-runs of Psych just as if I had cable again and it was the only thing worth watching. Thank goodness for Netflix I was able to do this, although watching this show reminds me of my brother.

My brother Daniel is currently serving a 2 year service mission for my church in El Salvador and Belize. He is and was my partner in crime. We have some of the oddest and most fun random memories together, a lot like Shawn and Gus in Psych.
For instance last year we decided to do a paper route together. It only lasted about 2-3 months. We were always tired and it was very crazy, but looking back we had fun bonding together in those wee hours of the morning. Lots of Krispie Kream donuts, good talks, broken shoes, and learning how particular people are about their newspapers. One morning one of our porch delivery clients had their sprinklers going off so Daniel tossed it up his long stairs and it landed on the top step. The next day we were informed that they complained it wasn't on their porch, they had to take a whole 1 step down to get it.  The next day we decided to rubber band the newspaper to their door knob, hopefully it was close enough for them that time.
We would take turns napping and watching kids during the day

Daniel and I would love to randomly challenge each other to things, where Daniel usually would win. Such as this video clip of who can hurdle the hedge.

Daniel is currently having fun sharing his goofy spirit with the people of El Salvador right now and loving it! He says his Spanish is coming along although it is very different than the Spanish he is familiar with from home. He said in his recent email that he and his companion are still like Shawn and Gus. That they had their shoes and backpacks stolen so they decided to just keep knocking on doors in their socks. It was a good conversation starter apparently. To keep up with Daniel's shenanigans his blog is http://elderdanielmckenna.blogspot.com/

Another person I think of when I think of Pysch is the person who recommended the series to me the first time around, that was Alex. Alex was a dear family friend who left this world far to early. He loved a good joke, the Texas Longhorns and his family. Which is why Daniel and I decided to do this prank on him shortly before he passed away last year. Daniel and I went to Rue 21 on a Tuesday night before Alex's movie night. In the store's clearance section they had an ugly Twilight shirt with Edward and Bella's face on it. For three dollars that shirt was worth hearing Alex's laugh. After the movie we went to thank and talk to Alex. I told him I was disappointed because Daniel had told me we were watching Twilight and I showed him my shirt. Daniel and I even held straight faces. He knew I was kidding but I'm not so sure his other friends in the room knew that, oh well!

My family loved Alex and look forward to the day we get to see him again. Its funny how such a simple thing like a show can bring so many fun memories of some amazing people.

Popcorn Popping on the Apricot Tree

I sometimes get these crazy idea's and I fly by the seat of my pants. My husband is very use to it and my kids sometimes are ok with it. This time I randomley decided it would be fun to pop popcorn from an air popper with no lid on. I could only imagine the kids laughter while we tried to catch all the popcorn in our bowls and mounths, similar to the game Elefun only yummier.

It started out fine, the kids were so anxcious for them to start popping.

Then as they started to pop out it was not as much fun. The kernels were much hotter than I thought they would be! Kadan seemed to be ok with it, Yesenia not as much. It went a little like this...

I don't think this entry gets me a nomination for mommy of the year award!

Crepes

It was yet another crazy day at our house. Kadan had basketball practice at 5:30, which is right when we usually eat. So we had an early dinner of grilled cheeses with out dad. After practice I thought some sweet crepes was a fun more filling snack. Now all my kids want for breakfast, lunch, dinner or snack is crepes. If its anything different (which it usually is) all I hear is whining thru the meal. There are not a lot of meals my whole family enjoys and I don't like making more than one thing for dinner. My kids don't understand how crepes can't be the solution to that problem every day. Kadan even told me he wrote in his journal at school, "My mom let me have an unhealthy dinner last night." Glad I'm doing such a good job giving my kids balanced meals!

This is one of my favorite crepes recipes which was given to me by my sister.

Caramel Apple Crepes Sauce
1Cup packed brown sugar
4 Teaspoons cornstarch
1 Cup whipping cream
2 Tablespoons apple brandy, brandy or apple juice
1 Tablespoon butter or margarine
2 Cups of thinly sliced apples (I peel mine and I use green apples)
In a large saucepan stir together brown sugar and cornstarch.
Stir in whipping cream and apple brandy, brandy or apple juice.
Add the apples, I use green so they don't get as mushy when they cook.
Cook and stir over medium heat until thickened and bubbly,
then stir for 2 more minutes.
Enjoy on your crepes.
